- I have been a practising artist in the Merseyside area for several years. Co founder of the Soup Collective - possibly the largest artist led group in the area, I have curated most of the group exhibitions, forging links and developing collaborative works with other like minded groups. My own individual practise has evolved significantly in the last two years or so, embracing the new skills and different approaches to the creative process learnt during collaborations. I was involved in several exhibitions during the Liverpool Independents Biennial, from the 'About Here' exhibition at The Gallery Liverpool with 3 other female artists, to the Soup Collective exhibition at Tate Liverpool. I have since instigated an international exchange. Collaborating with a Nordic artist, we will produce works for an exhibition at METAL Liverpool in February 2011.
The theme of my recent work is travel. It seemed obvious to me therefore that to fully grasp the essence of any journey, then the work simply has to travel.
Sticking with the format of wings, which I hope in itself will be seen to outsiders as a metaphor, I thought about how I personally pass the time during any journey.
I read.....and I listen to music.
What music sums up travelling....and how can I pass that on without actually using sound?
Looking at lyrics that were loosely based on travelling, I initially chose Lou Reed's 'Passenger' - which is now on show at Blackburne House in Liverpool. My next choice was 'King of the Road' because it has a relaxed, drifting sort of feel. Even though it is an old song, people from all ages and different geographical areas seem to know it. Combining the lyrics with the shape, I had the onset of a project.
